Setting up Two-factor Authentication

After the Grid account is setup, you may need two-factor authentication (2FA) in order to access project spaces if the security level of your data/project is deemed high enough.

Please note that as of November 2016, with the introduction of the Duo Security 2FA, the mode for accessing project spaces with elevated security restrictions may have changed. Please contact RCS about this matter.

You will use a time-expired, temporary token in addition to your password to authenticate access to the Grid.

To request a token, please visit https://hbs.service-now.com/hbsit/token_request.do. You should indicate that the “Primary reason for access” is “RCS: Research Grid”. During the approval process, you will be asked whether you want to use a smartphone app or a fob to generate the required token.

If you request a fob, this will be delivered to RCS and must be signed for by the faculty member or an authorized assistant.

If you wish to use the smartphone app for two-factor authentication and generating your temporary token, please download the app for Android or iPhone.

A couple of things to keep in mind about two-factor authentication:

  1. Once your grid account is two-factor, you will be required to use two-factor every time you log on to the Grid. It does not matter whether you are logging on to access the project spaces or not; you will always need it.

  2. You are not allowed to map a network drive from your desktop to the Level 4 space.
