MariaDB Changes

June 9, 2017

We have been working diligently on implementing a solution for fine-grained backup of research databases which will complement the standard nightly system backup. We have posted our first draft of the backup plan on the MariaDB section of our website, and we invite your comments. Also, please contact us if you have different backup requirements.

In addition to the new backup service, we will be updating the MariaDB database server software itself to version 10.2. This upgrade will bring our research database infrastructure to current standards and include features such as encryption-at-rest, functions for reading, writing, and manipulating JSON data, the ability to store different data types in a given column, and (for power users) enhancements around queries, SQL language, and data management. We will notify database users in advance of the outage, and we hope that this will enhance your research toolbox.
