Recent Improvements to the HBSGrid: September 2020 edition

September 18, 2020

Monday's HBSGrid maintenance was another important update to provide expanded computing capabilities in our research computing environment:

Updated/New Programs and User Experience Improvements for NoMachine Users:

Researchers using the HBSGrid cluster via NoMachine now have MATLAB R2020a, Mathematica v12.1, and StatTransfer v15 available via the Applications menus. We will continue to install additional programs to make the environment more usable. And also are working on improving the look, feel, and usability of the remote desktop experience.

Live HBSGrid Demos

July 9, 2020

Software modules have arrived on the HBSGrid! The modules provide users with flexible access to multiple versions of software (e.g., Python 2.7, Python 3.6, etc.), software in home folders and project folders, and settings defaults for specific projects. One no longer has to use only the software version that was previously installed on the Grid.

On Tuesday, July 14, at 2 PM, Bob Freeman will present a special live demo on how to start using these modules,...

New Tip from the RCS Data Team

December 7, 2018

Natural Language Processing (NLP) assists computers with processing and understanding natural human language, such as speeches, tweets, and newspaper articles. NLP can range from counting the number of times a word appears in text to analyses that assess attitudes (e.g., positive, negative). NLP can be conducted on a variety of platforms, including the robust NLTK package in Python and several libraries in R.

For an introduction and hands-on experience using the NLTK in Python, DataCamp provides a free module as part of their NLP fundamentals course:...

Update to R on Grid 2.5

November 16, 2018

Thanks again for being an early adopter of the new compute grid. As we’re about to open officially on Monday, we would like to take this opportunity to update the central R / RStudio installation for a number of reasons. We would do this work early in the day on Monday, and it would upgrade R to 3.5.1, from 3.4.2. (Note that this update would require an update/reinstall of any R packages that had been compiled.)

New password protocol for grid guest account users

March 29, 2018

Every year, HBS IT requires that users change their passwords for security protocol. As a guest of HBS, you will be getting the following email below once you hit the one year mark of using HBS resources. Please note that the procedure for changing your password is different from the instructions outlined below because you do not have access to the “myHBS” portal.

Instead, please follow this link to change your password:...
